STUDIO NOTES: Made with movement & balance in mind, the dynamic harmony found in my work is about relationships - among forces, elements and objects in the world around us; between human beings & the myriad, ever-changing landscapes of that world; between the earthly & ethereal elements that make us human. An ode to ancient treasure with a nod to modern design, I aim to create versatile adornment that transcends time.

 JEWELRY CARE

  • Created to complement the human form, jewelry is made to be worn! That said, it is best to remove delicate chains and most earrings before swimming & water sports, vigorous exercise, and sleeping.

  • Exposure to air & moisture causes brass, bronze, sterling silver - and even 14k gold - to darken with time. This patina can add a desired richness to the metal, but to keep pieces bright & shiny:

    • Buff lightly with a treated polishing cloth or use a metal polish (Wright's, Brasso, etc.) for a deeper clean.

    •  Avoid removing & storing jewelry in the bathroom to minimize exposure to moisture AND the risk of losing it down the drain!

    •  Store items in airtight containers/bags when possible.

MATERIALS

14K GOLD: An alloy of 58.5% pure gold with other metals (usually copper, silver, zinc). Marked “585” or “14k."

GOLD- FILLED: Despite the name, gold-filled metal is not actually filled with gold. "Gold-filled" is just an age-old term that made its way into the jewelry industry lexicon; it is made by mechanically bonding a thin layer of gold to a brass (or other base metal) core. The value and durability of gold-filled is greater than gold-plated because gold-filled has an actual layer of karat gold - not just a microscopic film - as is the case with gold-plated items.

STERLING SILVER: An alloy of silver containing 92.5% silver by weight and 7.5% other metals (usually just copper). Marked “925” or “sterling.”

BRONZE: An alloy of copper and tin (roughly 90% copper 10% tin).

BRASS: An alloy of copper and zinc.

YELLOW BRASS: 70% copper 30% zinc.

RED BRASS: 85% copper 15% zinc. (Also known as jeweler’s brass, jeweler’s bronze, and Merlin’s gold. This alloy has the warm lustre of yellow gold and does not tarnish as quickly as yellow brass. For those with sensitive skin, this special alloy also tends to be far less reactive than yellow brass. Red brass is the default for any brass IOLINA pieces; anything made from yellow brass will be noted as such in product descriptions).
